The CLO agenda in 2026 is shaped by the convergence of three forces that have not previously coincided at this intensity: AI transformation requiring new workforce capabilities, persistent engagement decline requiring L&D to address the conditions that produce commitment, and C-suite expectation that L&D demonstrate strategic return rather than activity volume.

Yet mandatory diversity training has shown no statistically significant positive impact on workplace diversity outcomes in most research, and some studies document increased bias following mandatory bias awareness training. The design gap between what most DEI training delivers awareness, knowledge, compliance completion, and what produces measurable inclusion outcomes is among the most consequential in enterprise L&D, because getting it wrong does not just waste investment. In some cases, it actively produces the opposite of what it intends.
