- Foundational capability development — microlearning cannot be built from scratch. Compressing them to microlearning produces summaries that may be memorable but do not produce the understanding that application requires. The 5-minute summary of financial analysis principles is a useful reference. It is not a substitute for the programme that develops the ability to apply them.
3. Microlearning Design Principles — What Bite-Sized Must Mean
- One objective per module — completely achieved, not partially addressed. The microlearning module that covers “three things to remember about customer service” has three partial objectives. The one that achieves “identify the correct response to a customer escalation request in under 60 seconds” has one complete objective that the learner can demonstrate at the end of 5 minutes. Completeness of a single small objective — rather than introduction of multiple larger ones — is what makes microlearning truly standalone and actionable.
- Action orientation — the learner does something, not reads something. The microlearning that presents information and checks recognition is a short presentation. The one that presents a situation and requires the learner to make a decision, identify an error, categorise an example, or recall a key principle is retrieval practice. The design question is: what does the learner do in this module? If the answer is “receive information and confirm they received it,” the module is not microlearning in the capability development sense.
- Mobile-first — designed for the device and context of consumption. Microlearning consumed on a mobile device during a 5-minute workflow break requires a different design from eLearning consumed at a desktop in a scheduled learning session. Single-column layout, tap interactions rather than hover states, audio-optional design with captions, offline capability for interrupted connections, and screen-appropriate text density are not preferences; they are the functional requirements that determine whether the microlearning is actually completed in the context it is designed for.
